Healh Screenings & Selecting Our Breeding Pairs.
When breeding dachshunds, it’s essential to prioritize the health of both the breeding pairs and their puppies. Here are the common health screenings I conduct:
1. Hip Evaluation
Dachshunds are prone to hip dysplasia, a genetic condition that affects the hip joint. I ensure that both parents undergo hip evaluations through organizations like the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) or PennHIP to assess their hip health.
2. Elbow Evaluation
Similar to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia can affect dachshunds. I have the breeding pairs screened for elbow health to minimize the risk of passing on this condition.
3. Eye Examination
Dachshunds can be susceptible to various eye conditions, including cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). I have both parents examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist to ensure they are free from hereditary eye diseases.
4. Spinal Health Assessment
Given the breed’s long back, I assess the spinal health of both parents to check for conditions like intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). This may involve physical examinations and imaging if necessary.
5. Genetic Testing
I perform DNA tests for common genetic disorders that affect dachshunds, such as von Willebrand’s disease (a bleeding disorder) and other breed-specific conditions. This helps in making informed breeding decisions and reducing the risk of passing on hereditary issues.
6. Heart Health Screening
Cardiac evaluations are crucial, as some dachshunds can have heart conditions. I have the breeding pairs checked for heart health to ensure they are not predisposed to any cardiac issues.
7. General Health Check
A comprehensive veterinary examination is performed to assess the overall health of both parents. This includes checking for any signs of illness, proper vaccinations, and a review of their medical history.
By conducting these health screenings, I aim to ensure that my breeding pairs are healthy and that their puppies have the best possible start in life. This commitment to responsible breeding practices helps promote the overall health and well-being of the dachshund breed.
